Islamic Line Design (Janubi Zakhrafa Patterns)

In this book, Mahmudah Jaffer explores the flora and the natural environment of her country, South Africa, to establish Janubi (Southern, South African) Islamic Line Design (ILD), as an art discipline.

Prophet Muhammed ﷺ, at times, did line drawings and taught with these. Mahmudah Jaffer follows this example, and hence the description, Islamic Line Design (ILD).

Janubi ILD is introduced essentially as Islamic Manuscript illumination (Zakhrafa) motifs, and compositions.

Using geometry as a basis, she elevates her stylised drawings to a status of servitude for the artist and viewer to remember The Creator Most High.
